Time and place
I love documenting real life and am passionate about memory keeping, so it would be great to hold your family or maternity session in your house or at a location that is special to you. We could record the story of a routine in your day, like dinner and putting kids to bed, or getting ready to go out in the morning. Or, we could take photos along a bushwalk that you like to do or at a park where your kids like to play. Generally, outside photos are best close to sunrise or sunset, when the sun is low and the light is golden. Think about what you would like captured and we can discuss the best time and place.
Newborn sessions could take place in the hospital right after the baby is born, when grandparents and siblings first come to meet the new baby, or soon after arriving home, when your baby is still tiny and sleepy, or we could wait a month or two and have photos of the baby smiling and interacting with family members. It’s up to you!
What to wear
This is totally up to you, of course, but here are some thoughts. Wear clothes you love and feel good in. Dressing everyone in a similar colour scheme can be nice, but not matching outfits! Avoid big logos that draw the eye away from the moment being captured. Most importantly – dress everyone in clothes that they are happy to wear so they feel good about having photos taken.
Planning the session
If you would like photos of certain things, it might be a good idea to write me a list so that we are all on the same page about what’s going to happen. For example, Amy loves making us ‘cups of tea’ in the sandpit, so we’d like photos of that. We would love some photos of newborn Jesse having a bath. Ziggy reads books with his Dad every night so I’d love some photos of them reading together. Hazel has some special toys that she loves at the moment, so it would be nice to have some photos of her playing with those. Aubrey loves riding his bike and feeding the ducks at the lake so we’ll get some photos of those… Or, we can just go for a bush walk or have a picnic at a park and see what happens! The session is up to you.
On the day
We will have lots of fun together! I won’t just be a ‘fly on the wall’, but will be constantly chatting and interacting and getting to know your family. I won’t be directing or posing you; I will just be coming along for the ride. If you would like formal portraits, I am happy to do these at some point during the shoot – but the main focus will be on telling your story and documenting real life as it happens.
